Deerfoot Youth Camp

The Deerfoot Youth Camp is an independently owned and operated camp created by Tom and Joan Read to provide disadvantaged youth an opportunity to attend a sports-related camp in the summer for free to improve self-esteem, learn discipline and respect and encourage them to strive for excellence as students so they can attend college. Students who graduate from this program are invited back to the camp each year. In addition, the Read Foundation provides free tuition for any camper who graduates high school and is admitted to college.

HLKN has served as a sponsor to the Camp Director and Board of Directors over the years and a number of HLKN faculty members and students have been hired by the Deerfoot Youth Camp to work at the camp in the summer. Over a 20-year period, the program has served more than 2,000 disadvantaged youth with more than 200 graduates provided the opportunity to attend college.
