Division of Health Education

The Department of Health & Kinesiology’s Health Education Division offers comprehensive curricula that prepare students to help people improve their health, and thereby the quality of life, through effective health education, powerful networking, strong leadership, meaningful research and selfless service to others.

The vision of the Health Education Division is to be a leader in improving the quality of life for individuals on personal, community and global levels.

The mission of the Health Education Division is to train and equip professionals to facilitate improving human health through practice, research, and service.

To do so, the Division offers seven programs within two undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees. See below for a brief synopsis of the programs and degrees follows. Click the degree or program for more information.

  • A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Community Health will allow graduating students to educate people about their health in a variety of settings such as government health agencies (e.g., local public health departments), voluntary health organizations (e.g., American Heart Association), hospitals, businesses, and other health-related organizations.  This program includes a required semester-long internship and prepares students to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) Exam.
  • A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Health has two options.
    • The Allied Health Program prepares graduating students for admission to professional schools, such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician’s Assistant, Optometry, Health Care Administration, or Nursing.  This option provides an essential background in health education while students take the appropriate professional school prerequisites.
    • The School Health Program is one which uses basic health sciences and pedagogy to prepare students to teach health in the K-12 setting.  This option includes a full semester of student teaching and prepares students to sit for their selected teaching certification exam(s).
  • The Master of Science (M.S.) in Health Education is a graduate degree in which students prepare for more in-depth careers in the settings mentioned earlier. The master’s program seeks to train professionals who understand and consider the interaction between the individual, their respective state, and their social, structural land political environment. Admission to this program requires a bachelor’s degree, positive letters of recommendation, outstanding writing skills, and a strong GPR.
    • The Fast Track allows a student to move on to the master’s degree immediately following the B.S.
    • The Online Master’s Program provides an opportunity for students to work at their own pace
  • The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is an advanced graduate degree that prepares students to become faculty members (professors) and researchers. Students must be highly qualified to be admitted into this program.

Over 25 highly qualified faculty members serve the Health Education Division through teaching, research, and service, bringing decades of experience to Health Education students. Areas of research include health behaviors throughout the lifespan such as sex-related behaviors and substance abuse; comprehensive school health; health equity; genomics; global health; health program evaluation; community capacity; and network analysis.
