Bone Biology Laboratory (BBL)

The BBL was made possible by research funding by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) in 1997. BBL research focuses with bone loss that occurs while astronauts are in space, by collecting data on changes in bone and muscle from rats exposed to reduced weight bearing. The mission of the lab is to address answers for the long term for astronauts once they return to Earth and normal gravity.

Other studies performed by BBL focus on the correlation between prolonged restriction of diet calories and bone cell activity in the body, which is useful to the Department of Defense on addressing weight loss in the military.
