We are excited to have so many of our friends and colleagues join us on our campus. This year we decided to include Dancers Responding to Aids in our conference. This organization has done so much for our field and we thought it would be a great way to not only help them out in return but for us to take a moment to reflect more deeply on what we do. We have asked them to provide informational material to expose our young dancers to this organization. As part of the invitation, we have committed donating 5% of our proceeds to DRA. As part of our conference this year, we will present a guest artists concert featuring two incredibly talented Texas based dance companies. As many of our students are embarking on professional careers, we thought it would be nice to showcase two local companies. On Friday, March 13, 2009, we will present Kathy Dunn Hammrick Dance Company from Austin and Hope Stone Dance Company from Houston. We are aware of the large amount of talent located in Texas and these two companies are just a small representation of the great work going on in our state. The guest artists concert will fall at a time when we have traditionally presented an adjudicated concert. We will be presenting the adjudications a little differently this year: two shorter concerts on Wednesday, two concerts on Thursday and one concert on Friday afternoon. As mentioned above, Friday night we will host our guest concert while Saturday evening we will hold the Gala concert. Wednesday has been traditionally a travel day with a limited amount of activities being presented. This year many schools that are within close proximity to us will be asked to adjudicate on Wednesday. We appreciate your cooperation and we believe that the guest performance on Friday will make this small inconvenience worth it in the end. These new changes were implemented during the June cycle of reviews and affect all new grant applications. The stated aim is fund the best science, by the best scientists, with the least administrative burden. As chair of a study section, Dr. George Stelmach (Professor of Kinesiology at Arizona State University) participated in the assessment effort and helped implement these changes during the June 2009 review meeting. Among the key changes to be discussed are the new 1-9 scoring system, efforts to structure reviewer critiques, the greater emphasis on scientific/clinical impact, and the rationale for shortening grant applications and reducing the number of resubmissions allowed. A regular NIH review panel member over the last 30 years, Dr. Stelmach is a charter member of the NIH Motor Function Speech and Rehabilitation Study Section for the last four years and has served as the Chair for the last two. 167 Read Building Co-sponsored by The Sydney and J.L.
