TAMU Dance Awarded Collaboration Grant

2/10/12

The Texas A&M Dance Program has been awarded a grant to collaborate with other research and creative activities at the university.  The two year grant totaling almost $200,000 is an effort between the Department of Health and Kinesiology, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Visualization.

The team will lead a new initiative of interdisciplinary research and creative activities in Interactive Arts and Technology, focusing on interactive performance.  The group will develop a new course for students and develop interactive art and technology, integrating it with applications in a new line of research.

Students will create a work including motion capture, dance and visualization.  An example may be dancers on stage wearing motion capture devices which track their movements to manipulate the images on stage.  These interactive (some including audience participation) will be performed in traditional concert dance settings, labs and outside venues such as images being displayed on buildings and dancers interacting with the visualization as well as the landscape.  Around 100 undergraduate students and 20 graduate students will go through the program every year.

For an example of the type of work students will be doing, go to YouTube.
