Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships

The Department of Health & Kinesiology has 20 or more scholarships from four scholarship funds available to students in the department. Eligibility and requirements for each scholarship are listed below.

Academic requirements for all scholarships:

  • All current A&M students must have a 2.75 GPR, incoming transfer students must have a 3.00 transfer GPR, and incoming freshmen (current high school students) must have a composite SAT score of 1000, a composite ACT score of 24, or be in the top 25% of their graduating class.  All scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.75 GPR to keep their scholarship.
  • All students must be full-time students in the Department of Health & Kinesiology (12 credit hours at Texas A&M University). Students who change their major during the year will have their scholarship revoked.  Some scholarships have major restrictions, which are listed below.
  • Students who meet the qualifications may be awarded more than one scholarship.
  • Awarding of scholarships is a competitive process. Students may reapply for the scholarship each year and must submit a complete application to do so. Renewals will compete with the entire pool of applicants for the scholarship each year. Scholarship renewal for subsequent years is not guaranteed.

TOM AND JOAN READ ENDOWMENT FOR HEALTH & KINESIOLOGY - The Read Endowment for Health & Kinesiology is open to all students in the Department of Health & Kinesiology based on academic merit and financial need.  The scholarship amount is $1,500 ($750 fall and spring semester).

MARJORIE ANN JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Recipients of this scholarship must be junior or senior students seeking a kinesiology degree.  This scholarship is awarded on academic merit.  Award is $1,000 per year ($500 fall and spring semester).

N. GAYLE SCHMIDT UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE HEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS - This scholarship was established to honor Dr. Gayle Schmidt, retired faculty member and division chair in Health Education.  It is open to all undergraduate and graduate students in health and is based on academic merit.  The scholarship award is $1,000 per year ($500 fall and spring semester).

WM B. ROMAN, JR. '50 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN HEALTH AND KINESIOLOGY - This scholarship is open to all students in the Department of Health & Kinesiology based on academic merit and financial need.  It is awarded in the amount of $1,000 per year ($500 fall and spring semester). 


All department scholarships for the 2013-2014 have been awarded.


Graduate Scholarships

Lechner Scholarship - Two $1,750 scholarships to support new graduate students in their first year at A&M.

Health Promotion and Genomics Lab Scholarship - $1,000 scholarship for a graduate student with a strong interest and experience/background in genomics and health promotion.


 

College of Education & Human Development Scholarships

Service Learning Experience Grant - The objective of this grant is to facilitate high impact learning experiences across the four departments for faculty and students. These service learning experiences should combine community service and engagement with education and reflection. Awardees will be granted funds to defray the cost of supplies needed to carry out the service learning project.

Relationship to Board of Regents Members

All scholarship applicants must now indicate any relationship to board of regents of the college or university or its system's boards.  A list of current Texas A&M University Board of Regent members can be viewed at HERE.

  1. Regent's spouse, spouse's child, spouse's parent, child's spouse, parent's spouse;
  2. Regent's spouse's brother or sister, spouse's grandparent, spouse's grandchild, brother or sister's spouse, grandparent's spouse, grandchild's spouse;
  3. Regent's parent, daughter, son;
  4. Regent's brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, or;
  5. Regent's great-grandparent, great-grandchild, uncle or aunt (brother or sister of parent), nephew or niece (son or daughter of brother or sister).
