PEAP Course Descriptions

DESCRIPTIONS OF KINE 199 ACTIVITY CLASSES

ADAPTED - A course designed to provide remedial or optional physical activities for students who are unable to participate in regular activity classes. Admission to this class requires instructor approval and/or clearance by a physician. Students will be graded by performance in the designed modified program.

 

AEROBIC RUNNING

Beginning - Aerobic running is a form of cardiovascular conditioning/discussion topics including weather-related conditions, proper running mechanics, and types of training and benefits of cardiovascular conditioning. Testing mileage ranges from one to three miles. Grades will be determined by running performance and written evaluation.

Intermediate - Designed for the more serious and competitive runner, this course includes intense running workouts. Students should be able to run three miles easily before enrolling in the activity. The grade is based on a log book, a written examination, and timed running events.

 

AEROBIC WALKING - This course is designed to acquaint the student with fitness walking, power walking, and race walking techniques. Grades will be calculated based on a walking log, a written examination, a walking form evaluation, and skill tests. Skill will be evaluated based on a timed 1-mile walk, 1.5-mile walk, and a 2-mile walk.

 

AQUATICS

Beginner - Non-Swimmer Fear of water and/or deep water or very weak swimmer (can swim up to 25-30 yds but with difficulty). This is a course for non-swimmers.
Will learn: Front crawl, elementary backstroke, side stroke, back crawl, open turns, treading, floating, swimming underwater, jumping/diving, and personal safety skills.

Intermediate - Can swim a stroke on the front and back with no fear of deep water. Can tread water and can swim 100-200 yards any stroke.

Conditioning - Can swim 500-750 yards easily and able to swim front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke.
Will learn: Fitness and conditioning techniques applied to swimming. The average workout is 1500-2200 yards in a 40 minute class session. This is not a stroke technique course, but will review flip turn and grab start.

Water Exercise - Students should have no fear of water and submerging in water. Feel comfortable in horizontal position in the water. Can swim, prefer not to swim.

Lifesaving - Can swim 500 yds easily and can tread water for 2 minutes without the use of arms. Can dive and swim underwater. Can swim front crawl, side stroke, and breast stroke.  American Red Cross Lifeguard certification can be earned if course requirements are met by the end of the course.

Intro to Scuba - Can swim 250 yards easily.  Can tread water a minimum of 10 minutes.  The student will learn basic Scuba and skin diving knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become a safe and comfortable Scuba diver.  No special equipment is required.

Advanced Diver/Rescue Diver - Can swim 250 yards easily. Can tread water a minimum of 10 minutes. This course is designed for divers who have a basic Scuba certification or have successfully completed the basic course at Texas A&M or consent of the instructor. Students will receive advanced instruction and an introduction to specialty diving as well as skills and knowledge required for Rescue Diving. 

 

ARCHERY

Beginning - A basic class in target archery, this course requires no prior knowledge or experience. All equipment is provided. The emphasis is on target archery shooting technique, safety, and the history of archery. Grading is based on shooting skill, proper form, and knowledge of the sport.

Intermediate - This course assumes the student has knowledge and experience in target archery and includes advanced shooting technique, bow tuning, crafty construction and tournament preparation. Some equipment purchase is necessary with a cost of approximately $20. Grading is based on shooting skill, proper form, and knowledge of the sport.

 

BADMINTON

Beginning - An indoor racquet game requiring quickness, agility, and eye-hand coordination. Rules, skills, and various strategies and techniques of play are covered in this class. An in-class tournament in addition to written and skill examinations are used to determine grades.

Intermediate - This course is designed for the experienced badminton player. The prerequisites area grade of either an A or B in beginning badminton or approval of the instructor. The course contents includes strategies for doubles and singles, the backhand overhead clear, attacking clear, jump smash and half smash drop shots. Grades will be calculated based on skill measurement, tournament play and a written examination.

 

BASKETBALL

Beginning - This course is designed for students with limited basketball skills. Primary emphasis is given to the development of fundamentals basketball skills with little emphasis on play. Grade is based on skills test and written examinations.

Intermediate - This course is designed for students with limited basketball skills. Primary emphasis is given to the development of fundamentals basketball skills with little emphasis on play. Grade is based skill test and a written examination.

 

BOWLING

Beginning - The course is designed for student with little or no bowling experience. A bowling fee is charged at the lanes. The grade based on an average bowling score during the course and written examinations.

Intermediate - This course is designed for the experienced bowler. Prerequisites include a grade of A in beginning bowling, or an established average of 140 (men) or 120 (women), or instructor approval. Grades will calculated based on pin average, league play, skill tests, and a written examination.

 

CANOEING - This offers opportunities for developing both tandem and solo paddling skills; American Red Cross "Fundamentals of Canoeing" certificate is awarded to those successfully completing requirements. The grade is based on skill tests, quizzes, and a written examination.

 

CARDIO KICKBOXING - This class will introduce the students to many new and challenging activities that are used to develop skill-related physical fitness. Specifically, kickboxing and boxing will be used to develop fitness in the areas of cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, balance, speed, power, and coordination.

 

FENCING

Beginning - This course offers an introduction to foil sword fighting, basic defensive and offensive moves, history, and rules and regulations of judging techniques. The grade is based on skill tests, a written test and tournament play.

Intermediate - A continuation of foil fencing, this course includes more advanced defensive and offensive moves, binds, bolestras, stop hits, fleches, and developing strategy against an opponent. Satisfactory completion of beginning fencing or instructor approval is a prerequisite. The grade is based on skill tests, a written tests, and tournament play.

 

FITNESS & CONDITIONING - This course uses a variety of activities to develop cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. Fitness tests will be given in each fitness area. The grade is based on a written test and fitness tests.

 

Golf I - Designed for those who have never played golf, beginning golf instruction consists of putting, chipping, short iron skills, etiquette, and strategy. Grading is based on putting, shipping and short iron skill tests, along with written examinations.

Golf II - An extension of beginning golf, this course emphasizes perfecting the basics as well as introducing the pitch shot, middle irons and woods. The grade is based on middle-iron skill tests, 3 woods test, match play type competition, and written examinations.

 

GYMNASTICS

Gymnastics - Instruction in basic gymnastic skills for women includes uneven parallel bars, balance beam and vault. Skills for men cover rings, horizontal bar, parallel bars, Pommel horse, and vault. The grade is based on performance of basic techniques and written examinations.

Beginning Tumbling - Instruction over beginning level floor exercise or tumbling skills. The grade is based on performance of basic techniques and written examinations.

Intermediate Tumbling - This course if for students with pervious gymnastics experience. The required skill level for admission to the class is determined by the instructor. The grade is based on performance of basic techniques and written examinations.

 

HANDBALL

Beginning - Handball is a game played on an indoor four-wall court. Rules, various techniques and strategies are covered in the course. The grade is based on skill tests and written examination.

Intermediate - This class introduces advanced skills for the serve, footwork patterns, and fundamental shots. Advanced singles strategies will be introduced along with advanced drills and practice techniques. Enrollment in the course is dependent upon completion of beginning handball or instructor approval. Grades will be determined by skill tests and tournament play.

 

HEALTH & FITNESS - The lecture portion of this course is designed to cover health issues relevant to students including mental and physical health, nutrition, human sexuality, communicable and non-communicable diseases, use and abuse of drugs, and safety. The activity portion will consist of one of the following activities: conditioning swimming, fitness and conditioning, running, step aerobics, strength training, or walking. The class will meet twice a week. One class period will be devoted to the lecture material and the other class meeting will involve participation in one of the activities listed above. The lecture portion of the class will be graded with written work and written tests, and the activity portion will be graded on form and knowledge, not skill.

 

MOUNTAIN BIKING - The mountain biking class is designed to provide the skills and knowledge necessary for the safe enjoyment of a recreational lifetime sport, to provide the student with an awareness of the common hazards associated with the sport of mountain biking, and skills to avoid such hazards, and to provide the student with the skills necessary to maintain a safe mountain bike, and to repair common biking problems.

 

RACQUETBALL

Beginning - This indoor sport is played in a four-wall court. Instruction covers rules, skills techniques, and game strategies. The grade is based on skill tests, tournament play, and a written examination.

Intermediate - This class offers instruction in intermediate skills for the serve, footwork patterns and fundamental shots. Advanced singles strategies will be interdicted allow with advanced drills and practice techniques. Enrollment in the course requires completion of beginning racquetball or instructor approval. Grades will be determined through skill tests and tournament play.

 

SELF-DEFENSE - Introducing basic punches and the practical applications, this course focuses on coordination, balance, agility, strength and endurance. The grade is based on mechanics of techniques taught and written examinations.

 

SNOW SKIING

Beginning - Emphasis in the class is on wedge and stem turns; it is designed for students with little or no pervious experience in skiing. The grade is based on skill performance and written examinations.

Intermediate - Emphasis is placed on stem and parallel turns. The grade is based on skill performance and written examinations.

 

SOCCER

Beginning - Skills of moving, passing, dribbling, trapping, heading, throw-in and offensive and defensive positioning, as will as the basic rules and terminology of the game, are covered in class. The grade is based on skill tests, match play, and written examinations.

Intermediate - Beginning skills are reviewed, and more advanced offensive and defensive tactics are covered. Prerequisites are either a varsity letter in soccer or an "A" in beginning soccer. The grade is based on skill tests, match play, and written examinations.

 

STEP AEROBICS - This class is designed to improve or develop cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility through the use of 4-inch to 12-inch high benches. Grades will be determined through measurement of fitness skills and aerobic skills as well as a written examination.

 

STRENGTH TRAINING

Beginning - The purpose of this class is to introduce the student to strength training as a lifelong activity through the use of both free weights and machine weights. Proper techniques and training principle will be taught using different types of resistance. Grades will be based on muscular strength evaluation, demonstrations, a practical examination and a written examination.

 

TENNIS

Beginning - Designed for the student who has limited or no tennis skills, this course emphasizes proper techniques (forehand, backhand, serve, and volley) as will as basic rules. There is a limited amount of match play. The grade is based on skill tests and a written examination.

Intermediate - Designed for the play with tennis skills and a basic knowledge of scoring and rules, this course also requires that the player have some experience in playing both singles and doubles. The grade is based on match play in both singles and double, skill tests and a written examination.

Advanced - This class is designed to provide knowledge of detailed singles and doubles strategy and the development of advanced shots such as the approach shot, drop shot, topspin lob, slice groundstroke, and topspin serve. Admission to the class is dependent upon completion of intermediate tennis or instructor approval. Grades will be determined by skill tests, tournament play, teacher evaluation, and a written examination.

 

CHALLENGE ROPES COURSE

Beginning - These courses is designed to increase a student's sense of personal worth and esteem, promote personal and group interaction, and develop an increased awareness of one's physical self. This class is held at the TAMU Ropes Course.

Intermediate - This course is designed for students who have taken Beginning Venture Dynamics and would like to participate in more advanced activities. The grade is based on skill tests and written examination.

 

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

Beginning Ballet - This course provides the beginning classical study of ballet, the historical background of ballet and the knowledge and understanding of its cultural heritage. The course provides an appreciation of ballet as an instrument of expression and social identity. It also provides opportunities to learn and perform various barre and center combinations, improve and refine body alignment, as will as demonstrate the techniques of classical ballet. The course provides a keener sense of body awareness, musicality and greater appreciation of the ballet discipline. Knowledge of appropriate ballet terminology is also presented.

Intermediate Ballet - This course provides the intermediate classical study of ballet, the historical background of ballet and the knowledge and understanding of its cultural heritage. Intermediate ballet increases the level of difficulty in barre technique and provides extended center combination work. Concentration and continual refinement on body alignment is main focus of the course, as well as execution of correct technique of classical ballet. The course provides a keener sense of body and spatial awareness, musicality, and various ballet forms. Knowledge of appropriate ballet terminology is also continually reviewed.

Beginning Ballroom Dance - This course provides a historical background of ballroom dance and explains the influences reflected by cultural attitudes and interests towards ballroom dance. It provides the knowledge and understanding of social dance etiquette skills in relation to ballroom dance, and discusses the factors that promoted change in the styles of ballroom dance through the eras such as the media, fads, etc. Ballroom dance provides basic competencies in step patterns, rhythm &timing, body carriage, formations, positions, and leading and following techniques. In addition, it provides opportunity to perform and identify the basic movement skills used in a variety of dances. The course also provides correct use of vocabulary used in ballroom dance and a greater appreciation for ball room dance as an educational and recreational dance form.

Intermediate Ballroom Dance - This course reviews the historical back ground of ball room dance and the influences reflected by cultural attitudes and interests towards ballroom dance. It also reviews social dance etiquette skills of ball room dance, and continues to discuss the factors that promoted change in the styles of ball room dance through the eras such as the media and fads. Intermediate ballroom dance provides a more in-dept and continual learning of competencies in step patterns, rhythmical and timing skills, body carriage, formations, positions, and leading and following techniques. In addition, it provides opportunity to perform and identify more complex movement skills used in the Latin form s of ballroom dancing. The course reviews and utilizes correct use of vocabulary used in ballroom dance.

Beginning Folk Dance - This course provides a historical background or representative folk dances and the cultural influences that signify the heritage of these dances. It explores the knowledge and understanding of the basic fundamentals of folk dance. This will be accomplished through the appreciation of other countries' values, traditions and symbolic meanings expressed through dance. In addition, the student will expand his/her awareness of folk dance through reading, using correct vocabulary, observation of videos, and performance of specific movements and skills relating to each particular folk dance.

Beginning Jazz Dance - This course provides the beginning technical study of jazz dance. It provides a historical background of the birth of jazz dance and its cultural heritage. The course instructs on the basic steps, concepts and techniques used to develop motor and rhythmical skills necessary for jazz movement. Jazz dance also encourages individual style and creativity towards developing and learning various combinations, locomotor and axial phrase. Jazz dance provides the opportunity to develop coordination, stamina, flexibility and a greater appreciation of jazz dance. Format of class may include warm-up, axial/locomotor phrases, center combinations, preparatory work for turns/leaps and cool-down.

Intermediate Jazz Dance - This course provides the intermediate technical study of jazz dance and a review on the historical background of the birth of jazz dance and its cultural heritage. The course encourages individual style, creativity, and ideas toward developing and learning various combination, locomotor and axial phrases and composition study. Jazz dance encompasses the physical and artistic exploration of traditional and contemporary training methods and provides the opportunity to continue development of coordination, stamina, and flexibility. Intermediate jazz dance solos focus on the ability to learn several jazz forms such as traditional, lyrical and hip-hop. Format of the class my include war-up, increased axial/locomotor phase work, several combinations for various jazz styles, composition study and cool-down.

Advanced Jazz Dance - This course is designed to provide the advanced technical study of jazz dance. It reviews and discusses the historical background of jazz dance, its cultural heritage, and studies significant jazz artists and their impacts on jazz dance and society. Jazz dance encompasses the physical and artistic exploration of traditional and contemporary training methods, various jazz techniques and personal style of the instructor, which emphasize rhythmical movement challenges. The course provides an environment to apply and utilize prior knowledge and individual style on learning extended jazz combinations, complex locomotor and axial phrases and creativity towards developing student choreography. This course continues increased development of coordination, endurance and flexibility necessary for performing extensive jazz combinations and rhythmical skills, which is a primary focus of the advanced class. Format of the class may include warm-up, complex axial/locomotor phrase work, extended and intensified combinations of various jazz styles, choreography and cool-down.

Beginning Modern Dance - This course is designed to provide the beginning technical study of contemporary modern dance. It provides a historical background in regards to the pioneers of modern dance and explores the development of modern dance as a new dance form within society. Beginning modern dance instructs on the basic introductory training methods and the physical and artistic differences and aspects of the modern dance influences. It also introduces popular techniques such as Graham, Limon, Ailey and Hawkins. The course provides a basic understanding of modern dance concepts, qualities and dynamics including, fall and release methods, use of breath and body weight, locomotor and axial movement phrases, and spatial awareness. The format of the class may include warm-up, developmental section, locomotor and axial dance phrases, and cool-down.

Intermediate Modern Dance - This course is designed to provide the intermediate technical study of contemporary modern dance. It reviews the historical background in regards to the pioneers of modern dance and its development as a new dance form within the society. Modern dance encompasses the physical and artistic exploration of various training methods and concentrates on techniques such as Graham, Cunningham, Taylor and Hawkins. It promotes individual style towards creating, learning and interpreting various dance combinations. The course provides the continual study and understanding of modern dance concepts, qualities and dynamics including, fall and release methods, use of breath and body weight, locomotor and axial movements phrases, and spatial awareness. Intermediate modern dance also increases the focus of compositional study on creating movement and developing choreography. The format of the class may include warm-up, developmental section, extended locomotor/axial dance phrases, center combinations and brief cool-down.

Advanced Modern Dance - This course is designed to provide the advanced technical study of contemporary modern dance. It reviews and discusses the historical background in regards to the pioneers of modern dance, their influence in the dance arena and its development and impact as a new dance form within the society. Modern dance encompasses the physical and artistic exploration of both traditional and contemporary training methods. The movement content contains the personal style of the instructor, (evolving from her years of study), various technique forms and contemporary ballet methods, which emphasize movement challenging. The course provides an environment to apply and utilize the modern dance concepts, qualities and dynamics studied in the beginning and intermediate levels. Advanced modern concentrates extensively on performance combinations and choreographic work. The format of the class may include warm-up, developmental section, locomotor/axial dance phrases, extended and intensified dance combinations, choreography and brief cool-down.

Beginning Tap Dance - This course provides the beginning technical study of tap dance. A historical background of tap dance introduced as well as its origins and influences that shapes its cultural heritage. The course provides basic concepts of tap including coordination, agility, rhythm and timing sequences, phrase work and musicality. Students are provided the opportunity to create, perform and identify tap dance combinations, developmental and rhythmical movement skills. In addition, this course presents correct vocabulary commonly used in a tap class and offers the opportunity to develop and appreciation of tap dance.

Intermediate Tap Dance - This course provides the intermediate technical study of tap dance. A review of the historical background, origins and influences of tap dance are discussed. The course reviews and continues the study of basic concepts of tap including coordination, agility, and rhythm & timing sequences. It also provides students the opportunity to create, learn, perform and identify more complex rhythmical steps, combinations and movement skills. Correct vocabulary of tap dance is used regularly within the tap class.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Beginning - This class introduces the basic skills of passing, serving, and spiking. The grade is based on skill test and written examination.

Intermediate - This course offers a concentrated review of beginning skills and instruction in the six-two offense and the centerback defense. The prerequisite is either successful completion of Beginning Volleyball or a high school varsity letter. The grade is based on skill tests and written examinations.

Advanced - This class is designed to improve ball control skills, jumpins and overall quickness, serving power and range on defense as well as advanced offensive and defensive strategies. Admission to the class is dependent upon completion of Intermediate Volleyball or instructor approval. Grades will be determined by skill tests and a written test.


ADVANCED/RESCUE SCUBA:

Students in this course must either be previously basic scuba certified, taken a scuba class at A&M, or have the approval of the instructor.

1. Reviews and perfects basic scuba skills.

2. Introduces and practices advanced skills regarding more advanced diving in the following areas: Deep diving, Night diving, Advanced navigation diving, Search and Recovery, and advanced buoyancy control.

3. Introduces and practices both basic and advanced forms of emergency site management, search and recovery, removal from water and post care of divers and other water related emergencies.

4. Students will be prepared to become certified outside of class if they choose to do so. Certification is not required nor does certification have anything to do with grade or successful completion of this course. A referral documenting the theory and pool portion of an advanced and rescue certification will be given to each student upon successful completion of requirements. Students may become advanced and rescue certified by completing the "open water" portion of their certification outside of class via local professional scuba professionals or anywhere in the world at a PADI affiliated resort or dive operation.
