Online M.S. in Sport Management

Sport is currently very pervasive in American society. Millions of Americans avidly participate in recreational sports and athletics while millions more follow sports as fans and spectators. In fact, the sport industry is big business, generating $201 billion in 2005, thus making it the sixth largest industry in the country based on Gross Domestic Product. Unfortunately, as the sport industry has experienced vast and rapid growth, the problems and issues involving sport have multiplied.

One particular area in which the sport and athletic industries have suffered major tribulations is in the management of sport. Many of the current problems associated with the management of sport may have resulted from the conventional wisdom that former athletes and coaches were best suited for, and often channeled into, sport executive and administration positions without any training in the business and administration aspects of sport.

The primary objective of this proposed degree is to provide a specialized education in sport management. Graduates of this program would be qualified to gain employment in a variety of capacities within a variety of segments in the sport industry. The specific segments in which students will likely gain employment are in country clubs, health and fitness clubs, collegiate athletic departments, community sport organizations (e.g., YMCA's), and professional sport organizations. The training in the program will prepare graduates to enter these segments in positions such as sport marketing and sales, fiscal management, personnel management and development, and athletics administration and control.

This is an online degree program, such that students complete the degree away from the Texas A&M University campus. While we offer an on-campus degree, this is designed for:

  1. people who cannot move to College Station,
  2. are working full-time while also seeking to pursue their degree, or
  3. some combination thereof.
