Faculty members and students in the Department of Health & Kinesiology are actively engaged in the submission and procurement of external funding to support their work; conducting, presenting, and publishing research and scholarly works; and, disseminating research findings to the scientific and lay communities.
In 2008, HLKN faculty members obtained nearly $6 million dollars in new grant awards, expended nearly $2.3 million dollars in research expenditures, and published 88 peer-reviewed scholarly works. During the summer of 2009 alone, HLKN faculty members submitted nearly $18 million dollars worth of grants and contracts.
External funding has not only served to advance the research mission of the department but has also served to support and mentor dozens of undergraduate and graduate students.
For example, PhD students in the Department of HLKN authored or coauthored over 45 peer-reviewed publications and presented dozens of research papers at national conferences in 2008. The basic and applied research emanating from the Department of HLKN is making a profound impact on the profession as well as the quality of lives of individuals in Texas, the United States, and throughout the world.
The research and scholarly activities of HLKN faculty members and their students is just another way the department is transforming lives through the practice, study, and promotion of physical activity, sport, and health.
