On Friday, Oct. 26, the Department and the College held a dedication ceremony for the Omar Smith Instructional Tennis Courts, located on West Campus. The 18 courts will enable the university to teach tennis classes to 2,000 students each year and to host numerous local, state and national tennis tournaments. Smith graduated from Texas A&M University in 1937 and later became a faculty member in the department. During his tenure as Texas A&M University’s tennis coach from 1960-74, he compiled an impressive winning record. Naming these courts after Smith is a fitting tribute to the life of a great coach, educator and long-time friend of the department and the university.
